What's that noise?

I've had an odd noise in the cabrio engine since it was rebuilt and run for the first time. It only happens at certain speeds/rpm levels and sounds like a "hollow knock." Removing the fan belt makes no difference, nor does the car need to be in motion. A compression test shows 100 psi in every cylinder.

The current theory is that one of the pistons is bad, a hard problem to confirm. Looks like I'll need to drop the pan and pull the head. Ugh! Stay tuned.

BEEN FOLLOWING YOUR RESTORATION. CAR LOOKS GREAT. SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT THE KNOCK. WHAT YOU DESCRIBE SOUNDS LIKE A MAIN BEARING. IT COULD BE CLUTCH RELATED ALSO. WHEN YOU HAD THE ENGINE REBUILT WAS THE CRANK TURNED, AND THE RODS RESIZED? THE DULL KNOCK COULD BE THE CRANK MOVING BACK AND FORTH TO MUCH AS YOU LET OFF THE GAS OR PUSH IN THE CLUTCH ETC. ANYWAY YOU LOOK AT IT YOU WILL HAVE TO TURN THE CRANK OR THE RODS AND PUT IN NEW BEARINGS ETC. A LOT OF WORK. LET ME KNOW OR GIVE ME A CALL AS I HAVE REBUILT A LOT OF ENGINES OVER THE YEARS.
