How many did they make, Part III
I have discovered the production numbers for Buick and Oldmobile for 1936 and have done a little math which may yield a more accurate estimate of how many convertibles Pontiac built that year.
Buick made 179,533 cars. 1,650 convertible coupes were Special models (Series 40), 766 Century models (Series 60) and 1,139 were 4-dr (Roadmaster, Series 90) models for total of 3,555 or 2% of production. (Pontiac didn't make a 4-dr convertible until 1937.)
Oldsmobile made 2,217 6-cylinder convertible coupes and 1,021 8-cylinders, or 3,238 out of 205,498 cars made (1.6%). Combine the two marques' production and you get 6,793 convertibles out of 385,031 cars made, or 1.76%.
1.76% of Pontiac's 1936 production equals 3,142 convertibles, so it is probably safe to assume they made 3,000 to 3,300 ragtops in that year, about double of what I originally thought.
Here's what a Buick convertible coupe looked like:
An Oldsmobile:
A LaSalle:
And a Chevrolet:
They all shared the same body and top hardware, but otherwise are quite different. Very handsome art deco cousins of my Pontiac.
